Vlachakis_InternalPhotos_SedationDentistryHelping You Relax During Dental Treatment

Like many patients, you may suffer from dental anxiety or from more severe dental phobia. These common conditions can make you feel extremely apprehensive about your dental treatment. Even though you know, there is nothing to fear, when you get ready to visit the dentist’s office, you cannot shake your sense of worry. At Healthy Smiles Family Dentistry, we understand the burden of dental anxiety, and we offer sedation options to help you feel calm and relaxed during treatment.

Our Sedation Options

We offer two types of dental sedation:

  • Nitrous oxide: Also known as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide has been widely used for over a century. You will breathe this clear, odorless gas through a mask, and after just a few minutes, it will induce a sense of mild euphoria. You may become giggly and talkative under the influence of the gas, and it may cause a slight tingling sensation, as well.  Nitrous oxide wears off quickly, so you should be able to drive home after your dental treatment.
  • Oral sedation: This newer method has become increasingly popular in recent years. Dr. Vlachakis will prescribe a limited dose of anti-anxiety medication, which you will take before coming to the office. The medication will make you feel relaxed and sleepy. Depending on the dosage, it could induce a twilight sleep; although you will technically be awake during treatment, you will remember little, if anything, about the procedure when you wake up.

Before selecting a sedation method, you should consider your overall health, the severity of your anxiety, and the treatment you are going to receive. At your initial consultation, Dr. Vlachakis will help you decide on the best type of sedation for you. Depending on your needs, she may also recommend a combination of nitrous oxide and oral sedation.

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

If you experience dental anxiety, you may have put off treatment for years. This can have serious consequences for your dental and physical health. Without routine cleanings and exams, you can develop conditions such as gum disease, decay, and structural damage. In turn, these conditions often require extensive restorative treatment, and they can also lead to systemic health concerns. Thanks to our gentle, effective sedation options, you can protect your oral health and receive the treatment you need.
