At Healthy Smiles Family Dentistry, we provide outstanding dentistry for kids. Dr. Vlachakis is dedicated to teaching children about good preventative care, and she knows how to help our youngest patients feel comfortable in the dental chair. Our advanced technology, such as digital x-rays and intraoral cameras, allow us to offer gentle, effective treatment. We typically begin seeing patients around age 2, and we love watching our kids grow up as they return to us through the years.
Your Child’s First Dental Visit
Many parents are surprised to learn that kids should begin visiting the dentist long before their permanent teeth start to come in. Dr. Vlachakis typically recommends that children come in for a Happy Visit at age 2. At this appointment, she can check their dental development and look for any signs of decay or cavities. If the child is comfortable, she can also gently clean his or her teeth to remove any oral bacteria, plaque, or tartar.
After the initial visit, children should return to the dentist twice a year. At each appointment, Dr. Vlachakis will perform a thorough cleaning, and she will complete any necessary restorative procedures. We typically begin performing x-rays around age 4, using advanced imaging, which make the imaging process more comfortable and convenient. Many parents feel more at ease knowing that their little ones are not being exposed to radiation as a result of their dental treatment. Because the images feed directly onto a computer screen, many kids find the process fascinating. We often take this opportunity to teach children about the structure of their teeth and the best ways to care for their dental health.
Fluoride Treatments and Sealants
Along with routine cleanings, sealants and fluoride treatments are an important part of children’s dentistry. Fluoride is a vital element that helps to strengthen dental enamel and prevent teeth from losing minerals. Although fluoride is present in food and city water supplies, it is typically not enough to provide sufficient dental protection. By applying a fluoride gel or foam to children’s teeth, Dr. Vlachakis can supplement their fluoride exposure, providing more comprehensive protection for their oral health.
When the first adult molars appear, we typically recommend dental sealants. Dr. Vlachakis will apply a thin plastic coating to the top of the molars, preventing bacteria from accumulating in the deep grooves in the chewing surfaces. Together, fluoride treatments and sealants can provide long-lasting dental protection, helping to thwart decay well into the adult years.
